This particular file format carries information regarding ways of presenting a file with settings and actions in Windows Media Player. It also carries data about copyright, author, and bibliography of the main file. It should be noted that such information or metadata about the audio or video file can also be added directly on the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) files.

Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) format is generally used for streaming video on various video streaming servers in a swifter and easier manner. This helps in such situations where a huge number of Advanced Systems Format (abbreviated as ASF) files are arranged in a definite sequence to be played.
